Sínodo Los Tollos 2018, Vinedo Singular, Rioja
- Spanje
- 2018
Tasting note from Ferran Centelles MW for Jancis Robinson MW – Score 17.5
97% Tempranillo, 2% Mazuelo, 1% Malvasía. Vineyards planted at 430 m above sea level in Villamediana de Iregua. Hand-harvested. Manual destemming and no crushing. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel vats. Light macerations. Malolactic conversion in oak barrels. Aged in French oak barrels for 11 months.
Tasted blind. Very modern with a very sweet fruit character: ripe plums and blueberry juice. It is a consistent, modern and deep wine. Perhaps you would not immediately recognise it as rioja because the winemaking is imposed over the origin, but it is a concentrated and very hedonistic wine. Juicy, flavourful, concentrated and with a very tasty, honeyed texture. Fewer than 1,000 bottles of a fabulous Singular Vineyard. (FC). 14%. Drink 2021–2035.

Los Tollos 2019 Viñedo Singular (14%)
Villamediana de Iregua is the source of this 38-year-old parcel that was in danger of being abandoned when the Sínodo team bought it in 2014. Thank goodness they did, as it has yielded a superb cuvée of Tempranillo with 2% Mazuelo and Malvasía Riojana. Spicy, intense and peppery with wonderful focus, a sheen of new oak, violet perfume and layers of succulent dark berry and liquorice flavours. 2025-35
